A New School Year, A New Confidence: How Performing Arts Can Help Your Child Thrive

The start of a new school year can bring a real mix of emotions for children.
There is the excitement of seeing friends again, meeting new teachers and starting something fresh. But there can also be nerves, uncertainty and a dip in confidence, especially for children moving into a new class, starting a new school or simply finding their feet again after the summer holidays.
That is one of the reasons September can be such a brilliant time for children to get involved in performing arts.
At York Stage School, we see every week how singing, dancing and acting can help young people grow in confidence, make new friendships and discover what they are capable of.
And the benefits go far beyond performing on a stage.

1. Performing arts can build confidence
Confidence does not always appear overnight.
For many children, it grows slowly through small moments. Speaking up in a group. Learning a new dance routine. Singing a line on their own. Trying a scene with somebody they have only just met.
Performing arts classes give children regular opportunities to challenge themselves in a supportive environment.
Over time, those little wins can make a huge difference.
A child who might initially feel nervous about joining in can gradually become more comfortable expressing themselves, contributing ideas and standing in front of others. That confidence can carry over into school, friendships and everyday life.
2. It gives children a space to be themselves
School can be busy. Children spend much of their day following routines, concentrating on lessons and meeting expectations.
A performing arts class gives them a completely different kind of space.
It is somewhere they can be creative, move, make noise, use their imagination and explore different sides of their personality. Some children love being centre stage from day one. Others prefer to watch for a while before getting involved.
Both are completely fine.
A good performing arts environment allows children to develop at their own pace while still encouraging them to try new things.

4. Children learn to work as part of a team
Theatre only works when people work together.
Even when one person is singing a solo or performing a scene, there is always a wider team around them. Children quickly learn that they need to listen to one another, support one another and be aware of what is happening around them.
They learn when to lead and when to follow. They learn that everyone has an important role to play. These are skills that can help children in the classroom, in sport, in future workplaces and in life generally.
5. Performing arts encourages communication skills
Drama and musical theatre naturally encourage children to communicate clearly.
That might mean projecting their voice, expressing an emotion, listening carefully to another performer or responding to direction from a teacher.
For younger children especially, these skills can have a really positive impact on how comfortable they feel speaking to adults and other children.
It can also help children become more confident when presenting work at school or speaking in front of their class.
6. It gives children something positive to work towards
One of the great things about performing arts is that there is always something new to learn. It could be a song, a dance routine, a character, a script or a performance. Having something to work towards gives children a sense of purpose and achievement.
They get to see their progress over time and understand that getting better at something takes practice.
That can be a really healthy lesson, particularly at the beginning of a new school year when children are adjusting to new challenges.

7. It can be a great outlet after school
Children have busy days.
After hours of concentrating in the classroom, sitting at a desk and taking in new information, sometimes they simply need a chance to move and have fun.
Singing, dancing and acting can be a brilliant release. Performing arts allows children to use their energy in a creative way while still learning new skills.
For many of our students, coming to stage school is one of the highlights of their week.
What if my child has never performed before?
That is absolutely fine! Children do not need previous experience to join York Stage School. Some students arrive with years of dance, drama or singing behind them. Others have never stepped inside a performing arts class before.
Our job is to help every child develop from wherever they are starting.
Our classes are led by experienced tutors and industry professionals who understand that every child is different. The goal is not to expect everyone to be confident performers immediately. It is to create an environment where children feel safe enough to try.
Why September is a great time to start
The beginning of the autumn term is a particularly good time to try something new. Classes are getting back into their rhythm, new students are joining and everyone is beginning a fresh term together.
That can make September and October feel much less daunting for a child who is thinking about starting. Rather than feeling like they are joining halfway through something, they are becoming part of the group at the beginning of a new chapter.
